We’re looking for a proven technology leader to oversee Pesky’s technology strategy, codebase and engineering team as we build a new global supply chain.

About Pesky

Pesky was set up with a single ambition: to feed the world sustainably with seafood.

Today, Pesky is a digital market for British inshore fishermen - enabling skippers to sell their catch to restaurants, fishmongers and households via a fixed price market, prior to the morning wholesale port auction. By helping these buyers to source fish directly from the boats, we are enabling fishermen to achieve more stable and more sustainable prices for their catches.

Following the Covid crisis, our network of both boats and buyers has increased dramatically and as a result, we are looking to expand our marketplace to ports and buyers across the country.

The Role

As CTO at Pesky, you’ll be joining the leadership team to define the technical architecture that delivers on our vision. This role will offer sound technical leadership in all aspects of our business and help us deliver digital innovation to one of the UK’s oldest industries.

Bringing pragmatism and best practice to all that we do, the CTO will have a wide range of responsibilities, covering everything from data security to software reliability. Resourcing and budgeting will also sit in your remit.

The Tech Team

As an engineering team, we favour open source technologies, value writing unit tests and review pull requests as part of day-to-day development processes. We cherish continuous improvement for both our software, processes and people.

We’re full-stack and user-focussed. We rely heavily on AWS, React, ReactNative, Node and GraphQL. Our home-delivery ecommerce site is currently running off Shopify.

How you'll add value

Working alongside the CPO, the CTO will lead and manage our engineering team to develop a SaaS marketplace and order fulfilment solution that can be used by any port across the UK (and beyond).

The CTO will:

  • Ensure our marketplace technology can scale in line with growth targets
  • Communicate our technology strategy to partners and investors
  • Be hands on with the codebase!
  • Manage resourcing and budgeting for the Technology department
  • Lead and grow our team of Software Engineers
  • Build a great team culture - transparency and inclusivity is at the heart of what we do.
  • Mentor and coach each engineer in their career.
  • Build strong relationships with our 3rd party hardware and software partners.
  • Define and develop the requirements to support our future data science activities
  • Take compliance seriously (from fish quotas to GDPR)
  • Have an agile and experimental mindset

What we're looking for

We think a great fit for this role would be someone who has:

  • A strong record of leading innovative technology teams
  • Previous experience working in a high-growth operational business
  • Expertise across the full stack: From frontend through to security
  • An understanding of how to balance hardware and software solutions in the real world
  • No problem using 3rd party software solution when it makes sense
  • Localisation/Internationalisation experience : We intend to take Pesky globally!
  • The aspiration to nurture and grow an inclusive and diverse engineering team
  • Excellent communication skills
  • An interest in future-facing technologies and a desire to contribute to building a more sustainable future.

What's on offer

The seasonality of species, the variability of the weather and the desire to sell to every buyer in the chain are just some of the factors that make building the Pesky product a uniquely interesting challenge. As if that's not enough, here’s what else we can offer:

  • An industry ripe for digital disruption
  • A fast growing company
  • A chance to take ownership of a wide range of responsibilities
  • The support of a brilliant team of creative, solution-oriented software engineers
  • Flexible working hours and location
  • A combination of income + equity depending on your situation
  • Workplace pension
  • 24 days holiday
  • Discount on the freshest fish!

While our office is based in Central London, the technology team in particular is well set up for remote working (even more so now due to COVID-19). It is expected this role will require occasional travel to our UK ports.

If you’re excited about our mission and have some relevant experience, we’d really love to hear from you. We will always decide employment based on a broad range of skills and potential. It’s important to us that as a team we reflect the diversity of the people we feed.

We are very much open to flexible working arrangements and aim to facilitate any requirement you might have to strike a great work-life balance.
